Frequently Asked Questions

What is the OBC cutoff for JEE Main 2026?

The OBC-NCL qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced 2026 is expected around 79.43 percentile (based on 2025 cutoff). This qualifies OBC-NCL students from the top 2.5 lakh candidates. For NIT admission via JoSAA, OBC cutoffs are approximately 50% of General category closing ranks — e.g., NIT Trichy CSE OBC-NCL OS closes at ~2,100 vs General OS at ~4,463.

What rank do OBC students get at 90 percentile in JEE Main?

90 percentile gives ~AIR 1,55,000 in the overall ranking. However, for reserved category seat allotment in JoSAA, what matters is your rank within OBC-NCL pool (roughly 27% of seats). OBC-NCL students at 90 percentile typically compete within the OBC rank pool and can access seats that would require General students to score in the 95–97 percentile range.

Can OBC students get NIT Trichy CSE at 95 percentile?

Yes. NIT Trichy CSE OBC-NCL OS closing rank in JoSAA 2025 was ~2,100. At 95 percentile (~AIR 77,500 overall), your OBC rank would be considerably better. However, OBC-NCL OS seat allotment uses your overall CRL rank compared against OBC-specific cutoffs. You would need an overall AIR better than ~2,100 to get NIT Trichy CSE under OBC-NCL OS — approximately 99.86+ percentile.

What is the difference between OBC-NCL and OBC for JEE?

JEE Main and JoSAA use OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) — not all OBCs qualify. Students from OBC families with annual income above ₹8 lakh are classified as 'creamy layer' and must apply under General category. You must have a valid OBC-NCL certificate issued by a competent authority to claim OBC reservation in JoSAA counselling.
